Opening Day Try 2014

Been very excited for salmon season especially since I haven't been fishing much since shad season was a bust this year. Plan of attack for me was to stay
local this morning and toss spinners in the Basin on the AR in the morning then head up to the feather after if the AR wasn't successful for me in the morning.

Had a couple of friends and my step dad Scott join me in the morning and we got to the basin just before 0430. 0453 Started throwing spinners in hopes to get lucky enough to hook into one first day of the season. Throughout the morning we did see a few fish rolling, but not nearly as many as we normally see on openers in years past. Fish are here, but not as many as usual this time of year. Kept trying though keeping spirits up. About 0730 I feel a slight bump on my spinner and then just a bit of weight. Set the hook and nothing. I thought I had a quick strike that I missed, but it felt a lot more like I just came across the back or side of one. Felt bummed out I might have missed one, but nothing I can do about it.

Kept at it with high hopes. Saw the flossers up river of me hook up twice while I was there and saw one guy up river get a small jack on a spinner, but the whole morning that was the extent of the action I saw. Fished it from 0500-1000 for nothing hooked. Tossed spinners, kwikfish, and another fisherman next to me fished roe for a while for nothing. Went home to take a break, grab lunch and surf the web and do a bit of net working to find out who and where were the salmon being caught.

I received a text from a friend, of a friend, of a friend, that said there was a big school down in walnut grove.

I was talking to Ethan and we put some serious thought into dropping the boat in and trolling for the evening after Ethan got off of work, but Ethan ended up working late and it was still going to be cheaper for me to make the run to the Feather so I did that plus I had plans to meet someone up in Yuba City anyways.

Saw a posting on facebook a guy was selling self poured sinkers for cheap and I took him up on his offer and got enough cannon balls for drifting and trolling that should last me all season.

100 ounces worth of lead for 20 bucks. Can't beat it. Left Yuba City and made my way up to live oak. Everything I heard about the Feather so far was not good, but its the opener I've got to try anyways. Got to my spot around 1600 and talked to one fisherman who was already there who said he hadn't had any luck, fish just aren't around. Hopped in the water, got balls deep in and started working the drift hoping to come across one.

No sign of fish rolling here except for the occasion sucker that would leap clear out of the water. The highlight of my evening was actually seeing a dead king float right past me and as it drifted by I looked down river and shouted to the few fisherman below me "FISH COMING DOWN!!!" Everyone's head turned quick hoping to see someone hooked up, but we all got a good laugh out of it when they saw the floater drift past them.

Kept at it till about 2000 before I called it a day. Spent a good 9 hours total on the water on two different rivers, can't say I didn't try. Through networking with friends via text, talking to fisherman around me who were texting their friends, and surfing the web seeing all of the opening day reports my outlook on the conditions of the opener are as follows:

-The American has fish in the basin, but not enough to produce any consistent catching for anyone and warm waters with low flows has lead to a lot of debries and foliage in the water making it hard to do any kind of drift fishing (roe, beads). Best chance is probably in the mornings surface activity was non existent after 0900.

-The Feather River has fish in it was well, but unless your a boater drifting roe at the outlet your chances are next to none to have any kind of luck. Also has lots of debries and foliage for the same reasons as the AR.

-The Sac has fish pushing through and there are occasional fish to be caught, heard of several caught opening day from jiggers from Disco all the way through Courtland, but chances are still slim.

Hopefully with a bigger school of fish pushing through the lower sac the action on the Feather might pick up within a week or two if the fish decided to run up that way. I remember doing really well last year on the feather early August so hopefully within 2-3 weeks we'll start seeing some consistent catching numbers. In the mean time I'll be hitting the Basin a few times here and there in the morning to try my luck. Going to stay close to home until I hear of a consistent bite else where. Good luck to all who try there are fish to be caught, but I say save the most of your energy till the weather cools down a little bit and fishing picks up.

Yak's in Ocean Cove

I got a call from Ethan about a few weeks ago saying were going to Ocean cove for Rockfish and we got a
kayak for you so you have to go. "Whatever you say boss! I'll be there" haha. Ethan and I left work around 1730 to pick up our friend Andrew on the way and make our way out to the coast. We had a few friends who were already out there the day before who we were meeting and they had invited us out there with them to experience one of their favorite places to fish. We didn't get in until about 2200 and got settled and to bed pretty quickly to wake up early to be on the water just around first light.

Dropped the yaks in just before 0700 and our friends Paul and Nikolay lead the way to show us where they had found fish at the day before. We got on the blues and blacks pretty quickly with a few browns mixed in dropping bars and flies in 40-60ft of water, but our grade of fish was pretty small. Kept working the schools for lots of action, but not much size. A couple of hours into it our friend Andrew is quietly doing his own thing when we look over and his rod is doubled over and he's getting dragged around in his yak. Our first thought was cool our first ling so we all paddled over to try to help Andrew any way we could with helping him land his fish, but right when we saw color we saw the bright silver flash of a massive king that had grabbed his shrimp fly. That thing gave Andrew one hell of a ride and it was clear why. When he got that thing in it must have been at least 35lbs, absolutely massive. Huge surprise and really got everyone's blood pumping.

After a while fishing near shore we ventured off to deeper water looking for bigger fish. Hit a reef in about 100ft of water and tried dragging our gear through it. The few of us who could get down to the bottom without the small blue's grabbing our gear started getting lings. Between a total of 6 of us we got about 8 lings from 20-28 inches with several other bigger ones lost and a few hitch hikers that didn't hang on. The blue's were thick though! The blues and blacks were hitting our gear about 5ft under the surface which was awesome cause we would watch our gear go down, see a fly get hit, then watch the rest of them chase your second fly around and watch the fish grab your gear then you could reel up your double. Lots of action and lots of fun. Most of our fish were blues and blacks but we did also get a couple of yellow eyes and canaries. Our average size still wasn't great, but we were getting a little bit better fish that we could bring home for taco's.

About this time it was just about after noon and the wind was starting to make things a little choppy so most of us started heading in. A few of us stayed just to hit our shallow reef once more on the way in. One drift in and we get a couple more smaller rockfish and then Ethan and I see Nik hook into a nice one, then next thing we knew he was getting dragged around like crazy and his line was taking off right next to the surface, yep he's on a salmon on his shrimp fly too. He fought this thing for a while and managed to get it in and this one was probably 28lbs or so, another hog. After this everyone was ready to head in and get some lunch. I was dying to get a salmon for myself to take home, but of course I have all rockfish gear with me and nothing to target them with. There were another couple of yaks out on the water trolling herring for them and we saw them come back in with their limits, so I want to get in, get bait, and get right back out.

Got some lunch and picked up bait and I was on my way back down the ramp to get my salmon. Everyone else was pretty beat and conditions were getting snottier so they all stayed back. Screw them I came here to fish and you can bet that's what I'm gonna do. Paddled out into rough conditions, going against the wind took me about 10 mins to paddle maybe 500 yards out. Only my third time being on a kayak, trying not to over exhaust myself. I tried dropping shrimp down in a kelp bed looking for something I can use as live bait to either mooch for salmon or to drift for halibut with, I wanted it all the grand slam. I did managed to get a big stripped perch and a bunch of small rockfish, but I wasn't catching what I wanted and then I told myself I had tray herring what am I doing? I should be trolling right now. I reached behind my and grabbed my second rod to start the troll and tried leaning back to put my other rod in the holder out of the way. In the process I ended up leaning too far off to the side and with the waves being as rough as the were I got hit by a decent wave and I got throw into the water.

Took a good gulp of salt water just from shock of hitting the water which was wonderful, but I didn't panic I swam to my kayak and grabbed a hold of it, then I realized all of my gear just took the plunge to the bottom of the ocean . . . . . well I need to get back on my yak and get to shore lets not think about lost gear right now. Flipped the yak over and hopped back in. Bad angle flipped back into the drink face first. Ok attempt #2 flip it over and got back in at a different angle still managed to roll over trying to get into my seat. At this point I knew what I was doing wrong and just had to give it one more attempt to get in. Took a minute to catch my breath and get the strength for what I was hoping to be my last attempt to get back on. For anyone of you who are wondering, for me personally I thought the water felt great, not cold at all. No colder then when I was diving for crawdads in the American River during march. To your average person they would probably say it was freezing, but I'm used to the cold water so it didn't bug me at all and yes I did have a life jacket on. Last attempt got on and in my seat and took a moment to sigh about all of my lost gear. Two outfits and my box of gear which adds up to about 500$ worth of fishing gear, ouch. One boat came by once I got on and asked if I was ok. Told them I was fine and I paddled to shore.

Made it back ok greeted by a group of people who saw the whole thing for sure and they asked if I was ok and said they had already called the coast guard on me to make sure I made it out ok. Nice that it happened so close to shore and the launch ramp. I made it back ok though safe and sound and that's what matters. Favorite part was one gentlemen asked me, "Well what happened, did a wave hit you or were you being stupid?" Told him to be honest I was being an idiot. I went out when I shouldn't have and I was switch rods when I only should have had one out there, but I learned my lesson and now I know my limit in a kayak. My friends ran down and met me at the ramp after I got in and helped me with bringing the yak back up the hill where I got cleaned up and enjoyed the rest of the trip at camp.

Even with my mishap we all had one hell of a trip and a hell of a time doing the fishing that we could.

I didn't take my phone with me on the yak so sorry we didn't take lots of pictures. There is a video or two that might be uploaded later, but we have to see if we can work that out.

The conditions only got worse and no one else ended up going back out due to rough conditions. I did make a poke pole rod out of a branch I broke off of a tree to hit the rocks around low tide and managed one monkey faced eel before the tide came in on me.

Conditions didn't get any better Sunday morning so we took off for home, around 0900. Definitely want to get back out and do it again even after my mishap. Had a blast and I definitely need to get out the the salt more often.

My trip through the south.

My mom and my step dad were making a vacation out to Georgia and were planning on driving all the way back home and invited me to come out with them. I came along and was planning on taking advantage of the
opportunity
or get to fish in a few different states along the way. I fished in multiple places but I'm going to put this here cause the majority of what I did was in the salt.

My first opportunity to fish was in Cumming GA where I got to meet up with my old friend Mike and we rented some kayaks to fish on Lake Lanier for the day.

This is pretty much my first experience on a kayak for the most part so it was a whole new adventure in itself for me.

I was hoping to target some stripers while we were out there. I started off throwing spooks while the sun was starting to get high in the sky this top water junkie had to try anyways. No luck so we trolling our way back into an area called 6 mile slough. After we got into the slough while I was trolling my swimbait around I did see a few boils pop up, but being in the kayak by the time I could get to them the party was over.

After a few hours of trying and trolling around I gave up the idea that Mr. striper was going to come around for me. Gave up trying for that and switched gears towards trying for bass. Texas rigged a senko up and started tossing that around. Took me a little while to
find them, but I did start getting a few bites and picked up a couple of small fish tossing into some shady corners. Found out that pattern pretty quickly with as hot as it was fish were gonna be either deep or in the shade and I couldn't really fish deep so I stuck to the shade and picked off a few ditch pickles here and there most were small. I did get a couple though that were at least picture worthy.

Fished from 0700 till about 1500 for a hand full of small bass and called it from there. Got off the water in time to make it out to the disc golf course and try and get a game in the the guy who introduced me to the sport. Went out the the course and played a game with Mike father and Brother in law.

On hole 12 though the rain started coming down hard and we tried playing through it, but I couldn't keep a grip on the disc with everything being so wet. Glad to do what I was able to though.

Back a little further down south my stepdad's nephew Daniel took me out during the night for a hog hunt. Daniel has a friend who has a series a crops that the hogs wreck serious havoc on and Daniel goes out there to thin them out and protect the crops. As we showed up to Daniels house My Step dad Scott was telling me to watch my step around the area because they have spotted rattlesnakes in the area recently. As we got there sure enough they are all standing around over the top of one that they had just killed.

Cool thing to see, but man snakes are creepy things. Even with the head gone that thing felt so alive and weird in my hands.

Took off on our hunt and rolled up onto our first crop of watermelons and immediately saw one pigging out in the field. I took my first shot with Daniels AR-10 and missed, Daniel took a second shot and brought the hog down. Walked out to him and got to finish him off with the .44 mag. I've never been hunting before. I've just been a fisherman my whole life, so this was a very different and interesting experience for me.

Kept driving around the property looking for more boars out on the fields. Hours went by and we haven't seen anything else except a couple of deer and a coyote. Right as we were talking about calling it a night Daniel spots one about 200 yards out in the peanut fields. We hop out and Daniel and I stalk up onto it and try to get close enough to get a good shot. As we were getting closer we saw a total of 5 out there together out in the fields. Daniel told me once we make our first shot don't stop shooting until they are all gone/dead, or we run out of ammo because they are dangerous animals. Made it inside of 50 yards on the group to make the shot and I ended up taking one down in the bunch and the rest got off before we could bag anymore.

My second boar of the night.

After that we called it a successful night and went back home.

After a few days there we took of for Savannah GA for a day. Out there I got the chance to fish off of a pier in Tybee island.

The crowded beaches out here.

Made it to the end of the pier and just fished shrimp on a high low rig knowing I would be able to get something doing this. Sure enough didn't take long at all and I started getting some kind of perch or something around the pier.

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 768x1024.

Not really sure what it was, but they were plentiful and entertaining to catch.

Lots of people out fishing on the pier and it made some of the combat fishing to do on the AR look calm.

Most guys were fishing for sharks and rays and they were doing pretty well.

I didn't get a lot of pictures of other people's catches, but I did see one guy get a 4ft bull shark while I was there which was really cool to see. Seeing the bull shark though made me think twice about all of the people swimming on the beach though cause I know there are bigger ones out there. That was pretty much the extent of my fishing in Savannah.

Next stop was just past Destin, FL. Got out to another pier and I started off doing the same set up shrimp on a high low rig. I know I can't go wrong with that.

Started off pretty close to the end of the pier and started catching a couple different species of small bait fish.

This guy the locals told me was a pin fish.

and this they called a Hardtail.

The hardtails were a lot more plentiful and also much bigger and put up a hell of a fight for their size. Almost everyone was just catching and releasing them out there for fun and enjoying the day. A few of the fish as you could imagine die when they hit the water and there was close to a dozen dolphins in the area going to town on them.

It took me a long time to get a good shot of one on my phone, but I did get a few.

Most guys were tearing the fish up on sabiki rigs and there was one new thing I had never seen before which I'm pretty positive would not be legal here in Cali.

Its hard to see here in the picture, but around the bright orange strip is a bit of gill net that the small fish get stuck in. Interesting concept and it definitely was working, but not out performing bait.

Tons people people were pulling them up 3-5 at the time fishing was pretty good.

I noticed a couple of local cousin out here were keeping the hardtails, they told me they fillet em out and fry them. One guy moved next to me with his cooler and I was helping him fill her up.

After a few hours out on the pier I ran out of bait and came back into have dinner with the family. Guy at the restaurant told me that night fishing off of the pier was pretty good too and since we were here for the night say no more. After about 2200 I ran back out there. Got on the pier and I caught a pin fish real quick and threw it back out live in high hopes of getting onto a red fish. A red fish is one fish that is on my bucket list and I've been dying to catch for years and I knew this was going to be my first real opportunity to get one. Not how I always imagined it would be but I know they are out here and my chances were pretty good.

While I was waiting there was a lot of action on the surface and there were a few people throwing spoons catching some lady fish off of the pier. I didn't have any small spoons or plugs that I could throw for them and I was getting pretty jealous, not that they were catching and I wasn't, just the fact that I couldn't even fish for them. I kept watching though and I saw these fish busting the surface and this top water junkie knew I had one hell of an opportunity here. I did have a Jr. Super Spook in my box that I tied on and tried tossing which was pretty interesting trying to do from the pier, but the lady fish were smashing my spook! They missed more then 90% of the time but for some fairly small fish they hit with some serious aggression and fought like a bat out hell. Great and followed up with some major acrobatic jumps.

After a while I was able to bring several of these guys up onto the pier for a quick picture.

They kept me pretty entertained for a little over an hour before they stopped biting.

Was a pretty peaceful night out on the pier with lightning flashing every so often out in the distance.

Just as my lady fish bite died off I noticed a fisherman fishing near the surf get a pretty nice sized red fish.

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 1024x768.

Seeing that made me want a red even more so switched back to trying for them. The fisherman told me he caught his fish on a sand crab. I'm using a live pin fish which isn't the same but plenty of people out here have told me that it will work. Stayed out there nearly all night, but we stopped seeing the red fish cruising around and bites were non existent. Most people left and I was the last one out on the dock hoping the morning bite would turn on for me, but around 0400 the lighting that I've seen flashing all night was finally getting on top of me and the rain started coming down and the wind picked up good so I decided to get out of there while I still could and get some rest.

Next and final stop for us was New Orleans where we picked up my brother and spent the next few days experiencing the city. Running around in the city is not really my cup of tea, so I kind of just hung out in the hotel the most of the time. I did get a quick chance to fish a little bit near the city park where I was able to get a local species of sunfish.

Conditions weren't great though and I wasn't able to get into anything else out there.

Highlight of LA for me was we went out on a air boat tour and got to see the swamp and a few dozen gators.

Super cool experience to see.

Got home late last night and its been a hell of a trip and a fun couple of weeks. Definitely know where I want to spend more time at and try to experience more things at next time I go out there on my own. Still great to see and get all kinds of new experiences though.
