American River Steelies

Ever since
Steven caught his first fish he has been asking me every day, mark when we going back out? You free tomorrow? We going fishing? Sunday 2/24/13 he talked me into trying to wake up early and give it a shot before work. I dropped the ball and instead of waking up at 0600 I woke up around 0930. Opps, quickly got everything together and picked up steven to check things out real quick before I had to go into work. Long story short though we walked down to the honey hole and didn't see a single fish anywhere. None in our usual spots none jumping no nothing it was dead. Glad I didn't wake up for that. Fished for 30 mins anyways for nothing. Can't catch em all the time.

Monday 2/25/13 He convinced me to wake up early again to try and get out there. Got on the water around 0700 and same thing no fish to be seen. We did see a few jumping, but none within casting range for us. These fish are either not here in the mornings or there just aren't any fish here right now. Fished for 30 mins. and decided since we had time we would check out there hatchery. Fished there for 2 hours and out of 20+ guys I saw two fish get landed and 3 others get lost. Seemed pretty slow to me. I never managed to get anything.

Tuesday 2/26/13 I have been talking to Michael (bankcaster) for a couple of weeks now trying to hook up with him, but its been hard with our schedules not working with eachother's. Finally got him to come out and meet me and Steven though after I got off of work around 1200. I told him how terrible our last two mornings went, but we were hopeful. As we walked up to the water Steven saw several fish hanging out in the area and it was game on. Steven and I raced over to the water real quick to try and get the first hook up. Steven was actually the first to hook up, but it popped off pretty quickly after the hookset. About my 3rd cast in I hooked into one and landed my first fish of the day. Solid 28 inch buck on the darker side. Completely forgot to take a picture of my fish sorry.

Shortly after Mike came down and hooked into his first steelie.

A beat up wild buck, but still a fish. Everyone has hooked up already and we've only been here maybe 10 mins, that's awesome. Steven managed to farm a couple more and I lost one on the fly. After about 30 mins of us being there the fish moved off though. They would circle back in small schools or maybe a single fish would come by, but they picked up on us quick today.

With not seeing many more fish Steven walked a little further down river to try and find some more action. Heard him scream once and he broke off on a fish, bummer. He came back to re-tie then headed back down. 15 mins later I hear him screaming again and I walked down to check on him and he has a fish on the bank. Was thinking WTG Steven!!! Then I saw his fish.

Steven's first sucker! Nasty ass fish. Either way though a catch is a catch and these guys can still put up a fight.

Maybe an hour later Mike took off to take care of some stuff he had to do with the rest of his day. Was great meeting you and fishing with you Mike we'll do it again sometime soon. As he was walking up the hill I hooked up again and landed a smaller buck and got my limit.

After I landed my fish I saw there was another fish hanging in the area so I walked down to check on Steven and let him know a few fish moved back into our hole. As I walked down there I saw him with some bendo in his rod and he was fighting a fish!

But it turned out to be another sucker. Still cool to get something though. Steven moved back up to our usual spot and tried for the steelies we could see in our usual spots. After about 30 mins of trying that and losing two more fish he hooks into and lands his 3rd fish of the day and his second steelhead ever.

Very pretty little fish.

Couldn't argue with it though now he has caught 3 fish for the day to my two, even if the first two were suckers. Steven tried for another 30 mins for his second steelie, but it didn't happen. Still an awesome beautiful (windy) day on the water. Seems like the run is tapering off though, I don't know much about steelies yet, but I think its coming to an end. Shad season better get here quick I know its right around the corner.

Cache Slough 2/21/12

Talked to Kevin and we both have the sturgeon bug so we meet up to give it a shot, can't catch them at home. Got to Vierra's around 0730 armed with roe, eel, grass, sardines, and shad. Made the run up into Cache and searched for the arch's on the screen. Little harder to find today, but they were there. Lots of surface activity today too, saw half a dozen or more jump while we were there/headed into the slough. Started in roughly 35 ft. of water during the slack.
Tide switched to incoming and after it did I started getting very little nibbles on the roe. Nothing I could really set the hook on though. Kevin got a couple nibbles on his sardine, but again nothing he could swing at.

Little later into the morning we saw the Game warden come out and was checking boats around us for licenses and everything. I went to grab my licenses and pull my sturgeon card out to have it ready for when they check us and realized I forgot it in my truck. Not good, I had a pretty sick sinking feeling of hopefully they will be cool with me and let me run back and get it. Really didn't want to get a ticket for something stupid like that. By some miracle of luck for me though they rolled right by us without giving us a second look. The universe was nice to me today. After they took off I couldn't risk it back to the ramp we went to get my license.

Hour later we get back to the fishing grounds and I found a good school of fish holding in 70 ft. of water. Dropped down to em to see if we could get something to really bite. Kevin gets a decent hit on his eel and when he goes to swing on the hook set his spool spun cause the drag wasn't set tight enough and opportunity missed. Later I gave up on the grass and switched it out for some shad. Almost immediately it got slammed and when I swung for the hook set I made the same mistake and another opportunity gone. Can't believe we both made that same rookie mistake practically back to back. Nothing much else here after that besides small nibbles on shad and eel.

Improvised some new rob balancers for my boat and was testing them out today.

I feel like they can be slightly better, but they still get he job done. Work in progress.

Wind was kicking up good now and was rocking the boat just a little too much for Kevin and he started getting pretty green so we headed further in to fish some calmer waters. Found some more arch's in 45 ft of water and dropped the baits back down there to hopefully get something in the boat.

I lost Kevin for a while though.

He got pretty comfy and passed out trying to sleep his sick feeling away. Rod in hand and everything.

Fished here through the next tide change and not until the beginning of the outgo we started getting nibbles on roe and shad, but only nibbles, nothing real solid or any pumps to swing at. Warden came back around and checked us, really glad I made the run back to get my license now. Got lucky on that one. Talked to them for a bit and they said they haven't seen anyone with a fish all day, so at least its not just us. We did see one boat fighting a fish, but never managed to see them land it.

That was all of our action we had today though. Off of the water around 1500 to make it back home to go to school on time. Had a hard time leaving I wanted to stick it out to get that good bite. Learning a little more with each trip though, finding more holes, and getting closer to that keeper. Going to try to make it back out in a week or two to try again, nice to have some company with me today and not be bored to death out there solo just staring at my rods the whole time. Great fishing with you Kevin! We'll get em next time, hopefully.

Steel Head Cherry Popped

Got off work early today and asked Steven if he wanted to brave the weather and try for steelies again. He said he was game so we ran down to the honey hole to try our luck. Walked up to the river around 1300 and immediately saw a few fish in the area as usual. I told Steven first one to land a fish wins. 30 mins into it Steven hooks into a fish, but after the better part of a minute the fish popped off. Part of the game, we kept at it for a while and I managed to hook up a few times myself, but couldn't get anything to stay hooked. I noticed Steven was a lot more into it today and has been learning a lot especially after losing one last time I brought him out and just a bit ago.

He was on a couple of fish that he managed to hook into and lose a few times.

I knew it was going to happen though, so I eventually just put my
rod down and tried capturing this on video and I did.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p981jpnRjoU

Through the rain, wind, and hail! he managed to finally land his first steel head ever. After weeks of coming with me trying to learn he finally got one. Even though it was foul hooked and a wild fish, it didn't matter it was all fun and a hell of an experience. I'm glad I got to witness him get his fish.

When I stopped the video to take a still pic of Steven with his fish his hands were so numb and cold he couldn't hang on to the fish and it flopped out of his hands and back into the river it went.

Still got a funny picture out of it though. Tried fishing through the rest of the weather, but it was a tough cold afternoon though. Later I did managed to stick a fish pretty good though and I handed the rod off to Steven, hopefully we can get him a keeper this time.

Little longer fight, but we got this one in and its a legal fish.

Tough day in the weather, but well worth it and it was a blast getting Steven on his first steelie. I've said it before and I'll say it again I have some serious respect for him for having the patience to learn how to fish by fishing for steel head with me.

We'll be back at it again next week, planning on a sturgeon trip next. Hopefully I can finally get my keeper.

Till then guys

American Pardee 2/14-2/17

Been really busy working and more importantly fishing, late on getting to writing my reports so here is another combo report for you guys.

Thursday Deni and I didn't have our schedules worked out to spend valentines day with each other unfortunately. I was planning on just working on homework all day, but luckily for me it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it was going to. In Rancho got some free time to the river I go! Had my friend Steven with me and we were at the honey hole around 1300 looking for fish. On an normal day I usually will see 4-5 fish hanging out in the area, but today I don't know what happened I saw a couple of dozen fish moving all around the area. Lots were chrome too. Dante recently hooked me up with a badass new fly fishing outfit that I brought out with me for the first time today in high hopes of getting my first steelie on the fly. Thanks Dante!!! Had to get used to the different weight, but it didn't take me too long to get it down and to get into a fish!

First thing I realized was it is much harder to land one of these suckers on a fly rod. Takes a lot more patience and you have to play em out a lot longer. Nearly a 20 minute fight and fish finally gets up close to shore and pretty much jumps on to the bank for me.

The fact that Steven managed to get this picture is nothing short of a miracle shot.

Did finally get him in and to the bank though.

Fish was unfortunately foul hooked behind the gill plate, but by far the most beautiful fish I have landed yet.

Either way I got a fish on the fly I was happy with my day. My next goal was to get Steven on his first steelhead. I spent the next hour trying to coach Steven and get him onto a fish. He managed to hook up 3 times only to have the fish spit the hook immediately after. That's why its called fishing though.

I started fishing again with my bait casting rod. I don't know if I could handle another fight on the fly rod. Over the next two hours I managed to hook into and lose 4 before I was finally able to land another one.

Another one for the
smoker. We stuck it out for a while longer really hoping to get Steven on a fish. He did manage to hook up one more time, but it came unbuttoned again. Had to leave before sun down for class.

Friday 2/15 I'm stuck working all day and getting text messages from Ethan (Etray) and friends telling me how amazing the fishing is opening day at Pardee for the opener. I had a campsite reserved for the weekend and was planning on going out there this morning, but my boss needed me to work today. Absolutely going crazy at work wishing I was fishing I finally got off at 2030. Got everything together, after shopping for all the food we needed, getting gas, and driving out there we made it to the campsite around 2300 to set up camp. Right after midnight Ethan, his girlfriend Shelby (Candace), and I walked down to the mud hole to soak some power bait. My usual spot I fished last year wasn't producing for us even though we heard tons of fish jumping and even some monster fish were breaking the surface and making a hell of a lot of noise in the midnight air. I tried throwing a glow jig around for the longest time, but nothing got touched.

After a little over an hour without any bites. Ethan and Candace got cold/tired and headed back to camp to catch some ZZZ's. I had to try a couple of spots for a while longer, been looking forward to this trip for too long not to. Ethan told me he saw where a few jumped on his way out so I threw the power bait in there to see if I could get into anything. The hill I was on was too slanted for my chair and too rocky to put the rod holder I found into the ground so I was holding two rods while in the Asian squat waiting for a bite. Held the line tight just so I could feel anything that picked it up, and sure enough not more then 5 mins into it I got hammered and got my first Pardee fish. After that it was a bite every 2 mins and even after a few misses I had four fish in about 20 mins I didn't want to keep my limit cause I know wardens crack down hard on people here at Pardee on opening weekend, even at night. Since it was after midnight and I still wanted to fish the next day I left an open spot in my limit just so I can C&R the rest of the day.

Nothing huge, but they are some fat little fish.

Next morning 2/16 I run down to the island next to the boat ramp and see a couple of schools milling around the area. Tried throwing jigs at em, most were really spooky and didn't want to hit, but I did managed to stick one out of the bunch.

Went back to camp and cooked up some breakfast for everyone else then headed out to the Jackson creek spillway is what I guess is what it is technically called. Stood up high and we all cast various jigs, power bait, and power worms at passing schools and managed to get into a good amount of fish.

Candace kissing one for good luck. I think Ethan found himself a keeper.

We fished it for a while and had our fun. Walking the fish all the way down and around the fence to the water or lifting them up 20 feet from the water to the top of the dam though was becoming a real struggle, after about 1300 we headed back to camp for lunch.

There were a lot of fish cruising around over here and I was really hoping that since I was getting them on jigs during the day I could hit them on glow jigs at night. One thing I have noticed at Pardee at night is that unlike Amador I can not get them to hit a glow jig. Power bait they will bite all night long, but for some reason they won't hit the tubes and night. We fished out here for roughly 30 mins. I actually had one hit that I missed. The wind picked up though, and before too long Deni was freezing. Since she isn't a die hard like I am she was pretty miserable, so we called it a night from there.

Sunday 2/17 Ethan had to be at work around 1000 so he and Candace left around 0730 to make it back in time. I woke up around 0900 and headed down to the island to see if I could bust a few fish while Deni was still sleeping. Found a school hanging out next to the bridge that me and one other guy worked pretty hard with our crappie jigs for an hour. I managed to get 4 out of it and he got probably 7 with both of us missing countless hits. I figured out and shared with him that since the fish were kind of spooky when they stopped looking at our jigs I could switch colors and then they would be interested for another 10 mins. till they figured it out and I would have to switch again. Luckily even though I only had 5 colors to work with, after I used all 5 I could start over again back to the beginning and it seeming like the fish had forgotten that they had already seen this color haha. After an hour though other people caught on and we had bobbers and sinkers bombarding us which of course spooked all of our fish off and the party was over. When will people ever learn?

Back to camp Deni was awake, took our sweet time with loading everything up and once we did that we headed back the dam to spend the rest of our afternoon. Much brighter sunnier day then yesterday and we could see and tight ball of trout the had decided to hang out in one corner of the dam. One other guy on the dam, Deni and myself had this whole school to our self's working em with crappie jigs and power worms for about two hours hooking fish pretty consistently and losing quiet a few as well.

Fish on baby!

All good things must come to an end though, again people caught on the the fact that we were catching fish and they weren't. About 6 other guys came up right next to us and started casting bobbers and Kastmasters over us turning it into a zoo and turned the fish off of the bite. Fish were still there, but action had died off and fishing wasn't the same with 10 people all casting to the same school of fish so we left from there around 1500.

A few of the fish looked like this. Fat football fish with some serious shoulders on em.

Back home around 1600 the sun is still up and I admit it I crave the drug of a tug, so didn't even unload the car, grabbed my other rod and my box I needed for Steelies, and headed down the river. Should have expected it since I know my spot isn't a secret and it is the weekend, but for the first time ever today there was another fisherman in my honey hole. I walked up river as far as I could to let him have his space. Threw beads here for about 20 mins and managed to hook up once, but this fish peeled off 50 yards of line easily in the first run and even after hanging on for a 5 min fight I could not get the fish out of the rapids and he eventually popped off. Talked to the other fisherman there and he said that there was another fisherman here earlier who walked away with him limit so I know that these fish had been pounded all day. After hearing that and not seeing any fish I kind of lost confidence and left after about an hour of trying, at least I was still able to hook and fight one for a while.

There is my salmonoid filled past few days and you know I'll be back at it soon. Its an addiction. I am so thankful Deni tolerates it, especially when were out camping and I drag her out in the middle of the night to fish and I leave the bed early in the morning to get my quick fix.
